Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a marine safety technology that allows vessels to broadcast and receive real-time position, speed, course, and identification data from other AIS-equipped boats.
In simple terms:
It lets you see other vessels on your chartplotter β even in fog, darkness, or heavy traffic.
π The Different Types of AIS
Class A AIS Transponders
-
Required on large commercial vessels
-
Higher transmission power & update rate
-
Broadcasts full vessel data continuously
-
Best for ships, ferries, and commercial traffic
Class B AIS Transponders
-
Designed for recreational boats
-
Lower power than Class A
-
Still broadcasts your position to nearby vessels
-
A major safety upgrade for offshore and coastal boaters
AIS Receivers (Receive-Only)
-
Lets you see AIS vessels
-
Does NOT broadcast your boatβs position
-
Often built into chartplotters or standalone units
π‘ Many modern VHF radios now include AIS receivers built right into the unit β a smart and space-efficient upgrade at the helm.
β οΈ Is AIS Fail-Safe?
No system on the water is completely fail-safe.
Not every vessel runs AIS, and smaller boats, kayaks, and unregistered traffic may not appear on screen.
However, AIS dramatically increases situational awareness β especially in:
-
Fog
-
Night running
-
Busy inlets (like Fire Island & Great South Bay)
-
Offshore runs
-
Commercial traffic zones
π The Real Benefit: Increased Situational Awareness = Increased Safety
AIS should never replace radar, proper lookout, or safe navigation practices.
But when used correctly, it creates a net safety gain by helping captains:
-
Identify approaching vessels early
-
Avoid collision risks
-
Monitor traffic patterns
-
Navigate crowded waterways more confidently
At Oakdale Yacht, we strongly recommend AIS for serious boaters running Long Island waters, especially offshore or in low-visibility conditions.
